Lead Systems Administrator III

Location:                              Colorado Springs, CO (Relocation Assistance Available)

Clearance:                           TS/SCI preferred / TS & US Citizenship

Start Date:                            February 2025

Education:                           Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or a related discipline, and minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience that include leadership experience.

Certifications:                     Required certifications: A+, NET+ / Preferred certifications: Sec+, Cloud+, CISSP, DoD 8570 requirements / MCSE/VCP; Requires access to SCI data and spaces and should possess a current SSBI/T5 with ICD 704 eligibility (which replaced DCID 6/4 eligibility).

This Systems Administrator III position encompasses systems and network administration tasks, cybersecurity responsibilities (e.g., STIG compliance, HBSS, ACAS scans), and hands-on technical work in lab environments, making it well-suited for a mid-level professional with a blend of IT and cybersecurity expertise. The IT Systems Administrator III administers and supports daily operational requirements of computer network systems including workstation, file servers, and web servers. Duties typically involve the installation of hardware, software, systems upgrades, network accounts, network security, and web page design, interface and updates, and local system design documentation. Maintains, troubleshoots, and implements network security tools including firewalls, anti-virus, and intrusion detection services. Trains staff on software applicable to their position, assists customers with information technology, monitors system configuration (hardware and software), and provides instruction on computers and applications. Technical requirements are applicable across multiple United States Space Command (USSC) and USSC Component Command Locations in the Colorado Springs area.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Team Management:
    • Provide guidance, mentorship, and supervision to junior system administrators and IT staff.
    • Develop and implement training programs for team members to enhance skillsets and ensure operational readiness.
    • Oversee project timelines, resource allocation, and task prioritization for the IT department.
  • System Administration:
    • Install, configure, and upgrade hardware, software, and operating systems.
    • Manage network accounts, group policies, and permissions.
    • Conduct regular system audits and maintain detailed documentation of system configurations and design.
  • Network Security and Compliance:
    • Implement and maintain robust security tools, including firewalls, antivirus solutions, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and Host-Based Security Systems (HBSS).
    • Apply Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and execute ACAS (Assured Compliance Assessment Solution) scans to ensure compliance with federal security requirements.
    • Assist in Risk Management Framework (RMF) documentation and accreditation processes.
    • Manage patching and update cycles for all systems and firmware.
  • Operational Support:
    • Provide tier-III troubleshooting for networked servers, systems, and peripherals.
    • Monitor system configurations and optimize performance.
    • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and training materials for system use and administration.
    • Maintain and inventory all lab equipment and ensure compliance with operational standards.
  • Customer Support:
    • Train staff in software and hardware relevant to their roles.
    • Assist users with IT-related issues and ensure minimal disruption to operations.

Job-Specific Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong technical expertise in networking, server management, and operating system installation.
  • Experience with patch management, firmware upgrades, and system auditing.
  • Proficiency in managing lab environments, including cable management, installation and inventory control.
  • Familiarity with lab test equipment and repair/modification protocols.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with management, stakeholders, and team members effectively.
  • Proven experience with federal contracts and compliance requirements, including RMF and STIGs.
  • Hands-on experience with ACAS scans, HBSS configuration, and managing antivirus solutions.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in an office and lab environment with standard exposure to office equipment and noise.
  • Must be able to lift and move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
