Project Summary
The U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) in Elizabeth City, NC, provides depot-level maintenance, engineering, and logistics support for approximately 200 aircraft across 28 aviation units nationwide. This contract delivers Scientific, Engineering, and Technical Services to ensure aircraft airworthiness and sustainment, focusing on corrosion management, materials testing, electrical and process engineering, laboratory analysis, and aviation system support. Skilled professionals in these fields collaborate to conduct failure analyses, enhance quality assurance, and implement process improvements that strengthen aircraft reliability and operational readiness, ensuring mission success.
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Materials Engineer with expertise in materials science, corrosion engineering, coatings, and failure analysis to support aviation maintenance and engineering initiatives. The ideal candidate will conduct research, develop innovative solutions, and provide technical expertise in material selection, coatings, and corrosion prevention.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct root cause failure analysis to identify material degradation and failure mechanisms.
- Perform corrosion failure analysis, develop mitigation techniques, and enhance material longevity.
- Provide technical expertise in coatings engineering, including performance evaluation and compliance testing.
- Design and conduct materials testing experiments using industry standards such as ASTM.
- Support aviation mishap investigations, providing materials analysis and failure assessments.
- Operate and analyze data from scanning electron microscopes (SEM), spectroscopy equipment, and mechanical testing devices.
- Develop and review material substitution recommendations, ensuring compliance with airworthiness standards.
- Provide consultation and training on corrosion prevention and materials science for engineering teams and aviation personnel.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Materials Science from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in materials engineering, failure analysis, or coatings engineering.
- Strong knowledge of aviation materials, aerospace coatings, and corrosion prevention strategies.
- Proficiency in microscopy, spectroscopy, mechanical testing, and laboratory analysis.
- Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work independently, and excellent communication skills.
