Senior Software Engineer IV – REMOTE

DAF Financial Management Enterprise Cybersecurity & Systems/FMWorkFlow Engineering Support

Position Overview

Seeking a Senior Software Engineer IV to provide senior-level systems and software engineering support for the Department of the Air Force Financial Management enterprise.

This is not a traditional application-development position focused solely on writing software. The Senior Software Engineer IV will operate within an integrated engineering environment supporting mission-critical Air Force financial systems, cybersecurity requirements, infrastructure, databases, development and test environments, configuration baselines, system modifications, deployment validation, and lifecycle sustainment.

The engineer will work across technical domains to analyze system requirements and modifications, identify dependencies and risks, develop technically sound solutions, support implementation, conduct engineering verification and validation, and ensure that changes can be safely introduced into highly available Government environments.

The successful candidate must be capable of looking beyond an individual application or technical component. The position requires an understanding of how software, infrastructure, databases, cybersecurity controls, configuration baselines, test environments, deployment processes, and mission requirements interact throughout the system lifecycle.

The position requires integrated enterprise lifecycle engineering encompassing infrastructure engineering, database engineering, system administration, database administration, and cybersecurity engineering to sustain, optimize, secure, and technically validate the FMWorkFlow environment.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Senior Systems and Software Engineering

Provide senior engineering support for the analysis, modification, sustainment, integration, testing, and technical validation of Department of the Air Force Financial Management systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyze existing systems, proposed modifications, technical deficiencies, operational requirements, and system dependencies to determine appropriate engineering solutions.
  • Evaluate proposed changes for their effect on application functionality, infrastructure, database services, cybersecurity controls, system performance, configuration baselines, and operational availability.
  • Develop and recommend corrective engineering solutions for identified technical problems.
  • Support implementation of approved system modifications required to maintain system usability and mission capability as technical environments evolve.
  • Ensure engineering decisions account for both immediate technical requirements and downstream impacts to interconnected systems and technical domains.
  • Support the complete engineering lifecycle from requirements and technical analysis through implementation, testing, deployment, validation, sustainment, and corrective action.
  • Provide senior technical recommendations to Government and contractor stakeholders concerning system enhancements, modernization, sustainment, risks, dependencies, and technical alternatives.

Specifically requires system modification analysis, corrective engineering implementation, technical testing, verification, and post-deployment performance validation.

2. Development and Test Environment Engineering

Provide engineering support for controlled development and test environments used to evaluate system changes before production implementation.

  • Support maintenance of controlled development and test environments.
  • Assist in defining and maintaining appropriate configuration controls for development and test assets.
  • Analyze software updates, patches, enhancements, configuration changes, and system modifications before production deployment.
  • Conduct or support technical testing of proposed changes.
  • Develop appropriate test approaches, validation criteria, engineering procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Verify that patches, updates, enhancements, and system modifications function as intended.
  • Evaluate interoperability and technical dependencies between modified components and other elements of the environment.
  • Identify defects, unexpected behavior, incompatibilities, performance impacts, or security concerns before production release.
  • Support test-data management and protection requirements.
  • Support secure backup and off-site storage requirements associated with development data.
  • Document test results, deficiencies, remediation actions, residual risks, and production-readiness findings.
  • Provide an engineering recommendation regarding whether a modification is technically ready for production deployment.

Requires a controlled development/test environment, engineering validation of patches and enhancements, configuration-management controls, protection of development data, and production-readiness verification.

3. System Modification and Deployment Engineering

Lead or support the engineering analysis and controlled implementation of changes to mission systems.

Duties include:

  • Evaluate proposed system changes before implementation.
  • Review technical requirements, dependencies, interfaces, implementation plans, rollback considerations, and potential operational impacts.
  • Participate in technical and configuration reviews associated with proposed modifications.
  • Coordinate with system administrators, database personnel, cybersecurity specialists, program leadership, and other engineers before significant technical changes are introduced.
  • Assist with development of implementation plans and engineering procedures.
  • Support controlled deployment of approved modifications.
  • Verify that configuration controls remain intact following implementation.
  • Conduct post-deployment technical validation.
  • Analyze system behavior and performance following changes.
  • Identify and resolve implementation-related technical issues.
  • Recommend rollback or corrective actions when deployed changes do not achieve required results.
  • Document final implementation status and technical outcomes.

4. Cross-Domain Engineering and Systems Integration

Operate as a senior technical integrator across multiple engineering disciplines.

The Senior Software Engineer IV must be capable of working effectively with:

  • Infrastructure engineers
  • Systems administrators
  • Database engineers and administrators
  • Cybersecurity engineers
  • RMF and authorization personnel
  • Configuration-management personnel
  • Program management personnel
  • Government system owners
  • Technical subject-matter experts

Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate dependencies between software, databases, middleware, infrastructure, network services, cybersecurity controls, and operational processes.
  • Identify cross-domain risks created by system modifications.
  • Coordinate engineering activity when a change affects more than one technical area.
  • Support integration of newly deployed capabilities into the existing environment.
  • Resolve interoperability and integration issues.
  • Ensure technical changes are coordinated rather than implemented independently by individual technical domains.
  • Communicate system dependencies, implementation impacts, technical risks, and engineering recommendations to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Specifically requires engineering coordination across infrastructure, database, and cybersecurity domains, technical oversight of sustainment and optimization, and validation following configuration changes.

5. Cybersecurity Engineering Integration

Ensure software and systems engineering activities are performed within the Department of the Air Force cybersecurity framework.

The Senior Software Engineer IV will:

  • Incorporate cybersecurity requirements into engineering decisions.
  • Coordinate with cybersecurity personnel when modifications affect security controls, configurations, interfaces, or system boundaries.
  • Support implementation and technical validation of applicable security controls.
  • Evaluate technical changes for potential cybersecurity impacts.
  • Support vulnerability remediation activities requiring software, system, infrastructure, or configuration modifications.
  • Assist technical teams in implementing corrective actions identified through vulnerability assessments or security reviews.
  • Support testing necessary to demonstrate that remediation actions have been successfully implemented.
  • Maintain awareness of applicable Federal, DoD, and Air Force cybersecurity requirements affecting assigned systems.
  • Support technical implementation activities associated with RMF and Assessment and Authorization requirements when assigned.
  • Work with cybersecurity specialists to ensure engineering solutions do not unintentionally introduce new vulnerabilities or invalidate approved security configurations.

Requires RMF support, Assessment and Authorization, vulnerability management, compliance engineering, and security-control implementation across the DAF FM environment.

6. Configuration and Change Management Engineering

Support disciplined configuration management throughout the engineering lifecycle.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain awareness of approved system configuration baselines.
  • Evaluate proposed changes against established technical baselines.
  • Ensure changes are appropriately documented before implementation.
  • Participate in configuration reviews, engineering reviews, readiness reviews, and change-control activities.
  • Assist with technical analysis supporting approval or rejection of proposed changes.
  • Ensure software, configuration, infrastructure, and related technical changes remain synchronized.
  • Support version control and technical-documentation governance.
  • Verify baseline integrity after implementation.
  • Identify configuration drift or unauthorized deviations.
  • Coordinate corrective actions when baseline discrepancies are identified.
  • Support traceability between approved requirements, modifications, testing, implementation, and final configuration.

Configuration-management engineering and technical-baseline control are explicit elements.

7. Patch, Update, and Vulnerability-Remediation Engineering

Provide senior engineering support for patches, software updates, technical enhancements, and vulnerability remediation.

The engineer will:

  • Analyze patches and updates before deployment.
  • Identify affected applications, services, infrastructure components, interfaces, and dependencies.
  • Assist in determining implementation priority and technical risk.
  • Support testing and validation before production implementation.
  • Evaluate whether patches or remediation actions introduce compatibility, availability, performance, or security problems.
  • Support implementation of IAVA, TCNO, and other applicable security directives within prescribed timelines when relevant to assigned systems.
  • Troubleshoot issues resulting from patches, updates, or remediation activities.
  • Validate system performance following implementation.
  • Document engineering results and unresolved risks.

8. Advanced Technical Analysis and Problem Resolution

Provide senior-level engineering support for complex technical issues affecting mission-critical systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform structured analysis of complex system problems.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis when technical failures or degradation occur.
  • Analyze logs, system behavior, configuration information, interfaces, dependencies, and operational conditions.
  • Distinguish symptoms from underlying causes.
  • Develop sustainable corrective actions instead of temporary workarounds whenever feasible.
  • Support Level III technical escalation activities.
  • Assist in debugging complex infrastructure, interoperability, system-modification, and application-related issues.
  • Assess potential mission impact associated with failures and proposed corrective actions.
  • Coordinate resolution when multiple engineering disciplines are involved.
  • Verify that corrective actions restore required functionality and performance.
  • Document root cause, actions taken, final resolution, and lessons learned.

Specifically requires Level III technical escalation support, advanced diagnostics, log analysis, corrective engineering, and validation of system performance after corrective actions.

9. Technical Documentation

Develop and maintain clear, accurate, controlled, and usable engineering documentation.

The Senior Software Engineer IV will identify technical risks, dependencies, implementation concerns, resource impacts, and readiness issues requiring resolution before significant system changes proceed.

11. Government and Stakeholder Coordination

Work collaboratively with Government and contractor stakeholders supporting the DAF Financial Management mission.

The engineer may interact with representatives of:

  • SAF/FM
  • Air Force Financial Systems Office (AFFSO)
  • AFIMSC
  • Program Management Offices
  • System owners
  • Cybersecurity organizations
  • Database and infrastructure teams
  • Configuration-management personnel
  • Other engineering organizations

The engineer must be capable of translating complex technical matters into clear recommendations appropriate for engineering personnel, program managers, cybersecurity personnel, and Government leadership.

12. Operational Continuity and Mission Assurance

Engineering decisions must support the continued availability and integrity of mission-critical systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Consider system availability when evaluating proposed modifications.
  • Identify implementation actions that could affect mission-essential capability.
  • Support routine and emergency corrective engineering.
  • Participate in restoration and recovery activities when system changes or failures affect operations.
  • Assist with engineering necessary to support backup, recovery, resilience, and continuity requirements.
  • Support COOP-related engineering activities when assigned.
  • Verify that implemented changes do not unnecessarily degrade operational capability.
  • Support engineering solutions designed to prevent recurrence of significant technical failures.

Required Qualifications

Cybersecurity Workforce Qualification

IA System Architect and Engineer (IASAE) Level I and/or DoD 8140 System Administrator 632-Intermediate, as applicable to the contract and current Government direction.

Certification or qualification documentation must be maintained and provided when requested by the Government.

Senior Technical Capability

Candidates must demonstrate senior-level ability to:

A successful Senior Software Engineer IV does more than identify that a system has a problem.

This individual can determine why the problem exists, identify which systems and technical domains are affected, develop a technically sound corrective solution, determine how the change should be tested, understand its cybersecurity and configuration implications, coordinate implementation with the appropriate engineering teams, validate the result after deployment, and document the technical decision so that it remains supportable throughout the system lifecycle.

The strongest candidate will be able to operate comfortably between software, infrastructure, databases, cybersecurity, configuration management, testing, and program leadership while maintaining the disciplined engineering practices required in a mission-critical Department of the Air Force environment.
